The southwestern Japanese city of Fukuoka will get its first Ritz-Carlton hotel in spring 2023.

The Ritz-Carlton, Fukuoka is a joint project between Marriott International and Japanese property developer Sekisui House, and will be developed and owned by Daimyo Project TMK, a consortium of five companies including the Sekisui House.

The new property will be situated within a new 24-storey building in the Tenjin area, Fukuoka’s central business district. The new building, which will also include retail and office space, will be part of the “Tenjin Big Bang Project” led by Fukuoka City, which aims to redevelop 30 old buildings and increase the number of employees working in the area by 2.4 times by 2024.

The hotel’s lobby will be situated on the first floor of the building, while the front-of-house facilities, plus its 162 guestrooms and suites, will occupy the 18th to 24th floors with views of the city skyline. There will be six in-house restaurant and bars in the hotel, including all-day dining restaurants, specialty restaurants, a boutique patisserie and The Bar & Lounge that will serve cocktails and drinks.

Event and meeting facilities include a ballroom, two meeting rooms and a chapel for weddings and other celebrations, while recreational options include an indoor swimming pool, a fitness centre and The Ritz-Carlton Spa.

The new hotel will be located a 15-minute walk from Hakata Station, from which guests can take either the subway to travel across the city, or the Shinkansen, Japan’s high-speed rail, to Tokyo and Osaka. Fukuoka International Airport, located only six kilometres from downtown Fukuoka, can also be reached within five minutes from Hakata Station.

Marriott has been growing its luxury portfolio in Japan, with eight already opened luxury hotels – including four Ritz-Carlton hotels in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Okinawa, The St. Regis Osaka, and three Luxury Collection hotels in Tokyo, Kyoto and Okinawa – as well as eight more luxury hotels in the pipeline.

The Ritz-Carlton, Fukuoka will be the hotel brand’s seventh hotel in Japan, following The Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Niseko Village and The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko, the brand’s first resort in Japan, both set to open in 2020.
