In keeping with World Environment Day on June 5, declared by the United Nations, many hoteliers are looking at more ecological solutions to reduce their impact on their natural environment. Well-being and the art of living are also highlighted by brands and certain properties, with a view to renovating and integrating the new luxury codes.

Eco-friendly and health conscious sunscreens

Six Senses Hotels Hotels Resorts Spas will ban toxic sunscreens from its coastal hotels. The idea is to preserve both the marine environment, including the well-being of its underwater fauna and flora, and also to promote products that are healthier for  their customers.

From September 1, 2019, hotels by the sea or near a coastline, such as Six Senses Singapore, Six Senses Douro (Portugal) and Six Senses Laamu (Maldives) will only accept alternative solutions approved because they respect the human body, without harmful residue and whose packaging (major subject in environmental discussion) is plant-based or fully compostable. Approved products will be available in the shops of the hotels concerned.

Anna Bjurstam, wellness pioneer at Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas, testifies to this extensive and innovative research in the hotel industry: "We’re proud to be the first hotel group to feature a selection of environmentally-safe sun products throughout our organization. We undertook extensive research in selecting the best products on the market that are not only good for the land and ocean, but good for us too. We know that what we put on our skin ends up in our bodies. Multiple studies around the world have examined sunscreen use and the results have shown that significant penetration of toxic chemicals agents into the skin can result in cancer. It was our goal in mandating that all hotels and resorts use the new products that we provide our guests with the healthiest sun products available and that we do the right thing for the earth too."

Emirati hotels: no straws or plastic bottles

Last April, Hilton announced that it had eliminated these small objects that are so polluting to the oceans around its facilities in the United Arab Emirates. 3.5 million straws and more than 2 million bottles of water will be removed from the 25 Hilton establishments throughout the Gulf State. This measure is part of an overall effort to reduce single-use plastics including more than 2.4 million pieces of food and beverage packaging and 5 million plastic bags that have been replaced by biodegradable products.

William Costley, VP of Operations for the Arabian Peninsula and Turkey at Hilton said, “Last May, we made a promise to eliminate plastic straws as well as plastic bottled water from meetings and events, from all of our UAE hotels, and we are proud to have accomplished this goal. We will continue to work with suppliers to ensure that wherever possible, single-use plastic items are replaced with biodegradable and/or paper alternatives. These efforts support our global Travel with Purpose goal to cut our environmental footprint in half by 2030, to be better stewards of our natural resources and have a lighter environmental impact in our local communities.”

Four Seasons Resort Nevis renovates with a more natural appearance

Nestled in the Caribbean, this luxurious resort with 189 spacious rooms and suites and more than 50 luxurious villas has embarked on a two-year renovation phase. On the agenda: redevelopment of rooms and suites, transformation of the hall of the Grande Maison and development of two new restaurants for this fall, all in a local and natural style.

The general manager of the property, Gonzalo Güelman Ros, explains that "the traditional structure with its Caribbean style will use many natural materials". The new restaurant On the Dune will benefit in particular from these new materials: it will be built from solid wood from sustainable sources. With a surface area of 7,300 sq. ft, it will be able to accommodate 138, and it will also have a bar.

A Guerlain Spa elects domicile on the top floors of the InterContinental Bordeaux

The luxury hotel in Bordeaux now includes a spa designed by the famous top-of-the-range cosmetics brand. This installation, winner of the 2019 World Luxury Spa Awards, is on the top floor of the building. With a surface area of 1,000 m², it features eight cabins designed for body sculpting and all kinds of treatments, a sauna, a hammam, a relaxation pool and, during the summer season, a jacuzzi in the shade and the rooftop - La Night Beach bar.

Particular emphasis has been placed on the pool basin, the decoration of which is the work of Jacques Garcia. Set under a glass roof, it features jets, massage nozzles and a counter-current swimming system, all in a theatrical setting reminiscent of the architectural codes of ancient temples. A tea room set up in the direct vicinity completes this space with a catering offer.

F&B Innovation: wine service in the rooms at the Four Seasons Resort Orlando

The Florida resort, which is the only property within Central Florida to hold the coveted AAA Five Diamond Award, has developed an original F&B offer, which already has an award-winning gourmet restaurant, the Capa Steakhouse, which ranks among the Top-100 best wine restaurants in the country.

The property has installed a device that allows consumers to serve their own wine without leaving their room. Called Plum, it contains two bottles, a pinot noir and a chardonnay, which can be stored for up to 90 days. The principle is simple: the robot serves a glass (12.5 cl) at the fixed price of 8 USD, or a glass containing twice the volume for 15 USD. Customers can make their choice from a touch screen, and can even access information about the wine including photographs of the vineyard in question.

The device was installed in 68 suites, including the Royal Suite, the Presidential Suite, the Grand Suite and all Park View Suites, as well as Park View Rooms and some other rooms. In addition, the Plum can be customized according to the customer's tastes with their favorite wines.
