Bureau Veritas Iberia, S.L. has already certified the Meliá Hotels International system for preventative measures to combat COVID-19 in company hotels

The company’s COO announces that hotels will open in stages from July as the evolution of the pandemic and easing of lockdown measures allow a sufficient level of demand

Adapted brand standards, new food and beverage concepts, personal protection measures and social distancing, all focused on both customers and employees

Meliá Hotels International has launched the pilot phase of its "Stay Safe With Melia" programme to adapt hotels to the new normal and guarantee the safety of customers and employees in the post-COVID-19 era. The company has selected some of the hotels it plans to open first as "training hotels". These hotels have implemented new health and safety measures, new transit measures to guarantee social distancing, hygiene and disinfection equipment and products, and new food and drinks concepts which ensure health and safety without causing any decrease in the degree of quality or the customer experience. In addition, all essential information will be displayed on screens and QR codes that will allow customers to access the hotel's directory of services or the restaurant menu, for example, directly on their mobile phones.

As André Gerondeau, Chief Operating Officer of Meliá Hotels International, highlights, “our customers have had a few difficult months, and it is our duty to ensure they can enjoy their holidays in a safe and pleasant environment, offering them experiences and a lifestyle that they have been dreaming about ever since the lockdown began."

In order to optimise the customer experience without neglecting health and safety, the company has fully adapted its brand standards (including room and bathroom amenities, wellness services, bed linen, towels and sunbed locations, and others) and personalised service processes which differentiate the customer experience in each hotel and which have had to be adapted to the new situation. To ensure optimisation of the Stay Safe with Meliá programme, before each hotel opens its employees will attend an extensive training programme to guarantee in-depth knowledge of the programme and the best and safest way to attend to guests.

As André Gerondeau, Chief Operating Officer of Meliá Hotels International, highlights, “Meliá hotels will be prepared to welcome guests with the maximum health and safety guarantees as soon as operations can be reactivated, which we expect to occur in stages from the beginning of July. From the initial opening of some hotels in Palma and coastal areas, the evolution of the lockdown and domestic and international demand will determine the number of hotels that we will be able to open this season, allowing the return to work of our employees, and the reactivation of destinations."

A multidisciplinary team at Bureau Veritas has reviewed and confirmed the appropriateness of the procedures and systems developed by Meliá to face the post-pandemic scenario. The certified programme includes a restructuring of both protocols and infrastructures in company hotels focused on customers and their safety. Once hotels have been audited, they will receive the internationally recognised Global Safe Site certification from Bureau Veritas.

This certification guarantees the implementation of best practices compliant with the most rigorous international regulations and recommendations and thus ensures they all offer the highest possible level of procedures. The implementation of all the established protocols, which have been validated by Bureau Veritas, is mandatory in all hotels operated by Meliá Hotels International.
